The Cadillac Optiq has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The EX40 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Optiq has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The EX40 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Optiq. But it costs extra on the EX40.

Both the Optiq and the EX40 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Cadillac Optiq weighs 513 to 739 pounds more than the Volvo EX40. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the Optiq 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the EX40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the EX40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 2 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Optiq’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 28 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Cadillac higher than Volvo.

Power ranks Cadillac higher than Volvo.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Cadillac vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Cadillac 9 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The Optiq’s electric motors produces 52 more horsepower (300 vs. 248) and 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (354 vs. 310) than the EX40 Single Motor’s standard electric motor.

The Optiq’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the EX40 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Optiq has larger standard tires than the EX40 (245/50R20 vs. 235/50R19). The Optiq’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the EX40 (275/40R21 vs. 235/50R19).

The Optiq’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the EX40 Ultra’s 45 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Optiq has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the EX40. The Optiq’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the EX40 Ultra.

The Cadillac Optiq’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Volvo EX40 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Having a flat tire is dangerous, inconvenient and expensive. The self-sealing tires available on the Optiq can automatically seal most punctures up to 3/16 of an inch, effectively preventing most flat tires. The EX40 doesn’t offer self-sealing tires.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Optiq’s wheelbase is 9.9 inches longer than on the EX40 (116.3 inches vs. 106.4 inches).

The front grille of the Optiq uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The EX40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Optiq has 3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the EX40 (101 vs. 98).

The Optiq has 2 inches more front headroom, .7 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front hip room, .3 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom and 1.7 inches more rear legroom than the EX40.

The Optiq has a much larger cargo volume than the EX40 with its rear seat up (26 vs. 16 cubic feet).

Trailer Sway Control is standard on the Optiq, using the StabiliTrak® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the EX40.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Cadillac service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Cadillac fifth in service department satisfaction. With a 34% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 23rd.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the EX40, the Optiq offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Optiq’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The EX40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Optiq offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The EX40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Optiq has standard extendable sun visors. The EX40 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Cadillac Optiq has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the EX40 Plus/Ultra.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Optiq keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The EX40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Optiq has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the EX40.

The Optiq has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the EX40.

The Cadillac Optiq has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the infotainment. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Volvo charges extra for Homelink® on the EX40.

The Optiq has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The EX40 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Optiq’s Enhanced Automatic Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Enhanced Automatic Park Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The EX40 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
