Compare the2025 Cadillac XT4VS 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XT4 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Tonale doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The XT4’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The Tonale doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the XT4 and Tonale have rear cross-traffic warning, but the XT4 has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Tonale’s Rear Cross-Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the XT4 and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the XT4 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The XT4’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Tonale’s (6 vs. 5 years).

There are almost 5 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XT4’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the XT4’s reliability 12 points higher than the Tonale.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. With 12 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Cadillac higher than Alfa Romeo.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the XT4’s fuel efficiency. The Tonale doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The XT4 FWD’s standard fuel tank has 4.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (15.9 vs. 11.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The XT4 AWD’s standard fuel tank has 5.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (16.3 vs. 11.2 gallons).

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Cadillac XT4, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Tonale.

The XT4’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Tonale are solid, not vented.

The XT4 stops shorter than the Tonale:

For better traction, the XT4 has larger standard tires than the Tonale (235/60R18 vs. 225/55R18). The XT4’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Tonale (245/45R20 vs. 235/45R19).

The XT4 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tonale doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The XT4 offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XT4’s wheelbase is 5.6 inches longer than on the Tonale (109.4 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

The XT4 Sport AWD handles at .89 G’s, while the Tonale Veloce pulls only .86 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XT4 Sport AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Tonale Veloce (26.3 seconds @ .66 average G’s vs. 26.7 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the XT4 has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (6.7 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the XT4 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Cadillac XT4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 450 pounds less than the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

The front grille of the XT4 (except with towing package) uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Tonale doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The XT4 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Tonale doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The XT4 has .6 inches more front headroom, 2.4 inches more front legroom, .2 inches more front hip room, 1.3 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 1.5 inches more rear legroom and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Tonale.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the XT4. The Tonale doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Maximum trailer towing in the Alfa Romeo Tonale is limited to 2000 pounds. The XT4 offers up to a 3500 lbs. towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the XT4 uses the StabiliTrak® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Tonale doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Cadillac service is better than Alfa Romeo. J.D. Power ranks Cadillac fifth in service department satisfaction. With a 16% lower rating, Alfa Romeo is ranked 11th.

The XT4’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Tonale.

The XT4’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Tonale has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The XT4 offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Tonale doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The XT4’s standard Keyless Access allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless-Enter-n-Go standard on the Tonale doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XT4 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Tonale only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

When the XT4 is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Tonale’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the XT4 and the Tonale offer available heated front seats. The XT4 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The XT4 offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The XT4’s available Automatic Park Assist can parallel park by itself, starting and stopping automatically, with the driver only responsible for switching from reverse to drive. The Tonale’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The XT4 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Tonale doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Cadillac XT4 outsold the Alfa Romeo Tonale by almost 11 to one during 2023.
